Did Disney reuse old Apple Watch animation for the Toy Story 5 promo?

During the annual event hosted by the official Disney fan club, D3, Pixar took the opportunity to unveil a video teaser for the upcoming Toy Story 5. A tweet by Dylan McDonald, an app developer, pointed out that the teaser featured animations from the Toy Story watch face available on the Apple Watch since watchOS 4.

The characters showcased in the teaser include Woody, Jessie, and Buzz Lightyear. Apple introduced the Toy Story watch face in 2017, two years before the release of Toy Story 4 in 2019. The teaser for Toy Story 5 begins with a three-eyed green alien being lifted by a claw similar to those found in arcade claw machines.

Following the reveal of the fifth installment’s logo, each character is shown in an animation that closely resembles the 2017 Apple Watch face design.

Woody runs up to the screen, exuding his “Aw shucks” personality, and waves hello to all the viewers of the clip. Jessie then approaches the screen and winks at the audience. Buzz dashes to the left, exits the stage, and reappears in the foreground on the right, giving a salute to the viewers.

McDonald, who owns SunApps, claimed that it was an Apple intern working on the Apple Maps app who first identified the source of the animation used in the teaser.

Some people criticized Pixar and Disney for reusing the 2017 animation, suggesting they were lazy or lacking in creativity. However, it is possible that the reason for using the older animation is simply because there isn’t enough new footage available yet for a trailer. Toy Story 5 is set to premiere in theaters on June 19th, 2026.

Many of you are aware of the strong connection between Pixar and Apple, thanks to the involvement of the late Steve Jobs. Jobs paid $5 million to George Lucas, invested another $5 million in Pixar, and eventually became Chairman of the company.

This all occurred after Jobs was ousted from Apple by CEO John Scully, leading him to found NeXT. By March 1991, Jobs had become the sole owner of Pixar, and shortly after, Disney agreed to a three-film deal with the company. The first film produced under this agreement was the immensely successful Toy Story.

Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney for $7.4 billion in Disney stock on January 24, 2006, less than a year before unveiling the iPhone. This made him the largest stockholder in Disney temporarily and sparked ongoing speculation about a potential merger between Apple and Disney.
