Doctor Reveals What Not to Do with Apple Watches

In the nearly ten years since the Apple Watch was launched on April 24, 2015—a day recognized as a day of mourning in Switzerland—we have documented numerous instances where this device has played a crucial role in saving lives through its health-related features. Increasingly, doctors are noting that pregnant women are turning to smartwatches and rings to track various health metrics during their pregnancies.

Dr. Rachel Manalo, a pediatric cardiologist who specializes in treating children with heart conditions, emphasizes the significance of such monitoring. She is also one of the expectant mothers who wisely wore an Apple Watch while pregnant.

During her pregnancy in early 2022, after 18 weeks of carrying her child, Dr. Manalo experienced intermittent episodes of a racing heart. When this sensation persisted, she recognized that it was a concerning sign.

The EKG from the Apple Watch revealed a problem with Dr. Manalo’s heart.

She also felt short of breath and fatigued after examining a patient. “I remember sitting with the patient and giving her a diagnosis,” she said. “I felt dizzy just sitting in my chair like I was going to faint. When I got to 33 weeks, the rapid heartbeats wouldn’t go away, so I used the electrocardiogram (EKG) monitor on my Apple Watch.

An EKG tracks the electrical activity of the heart and the rhythm of the heart. If you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or later (except Apple Watch SE models), you can get an EKG reading of your heart.

Her EKG was deemed “inconclusive,” prompting the doctor to recommend a follow-up EKG conducted by a physician. Instead of the typical heart rate of 60-100 beats per minute, Dr. Manalo’s heart was beating at 150 beats per minute for over 40 minutes.

If you watch medical dramas, you might recognize her diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia, which indicates that the lower part of her heart wasn’t functioning as effectively as the upper part, resulting in insufficient oxygen reaching her bloodstream. Furthermore, her heart was already under additional strain due to her pregnancy.

The doctor quickly traveled to Los Angeles to consult with maternal and fetal medicine specialist Dr. Tina Nguyen, who expressed concern. “If this type of heart issue is not addressed, it can lead to a heart attack. And considering she was pregnant, we discussed everything in detail. I asked her, ‘When did you first notice this irregular heart rate?

When did you start experiencing symptoms?’ She replied, ‘My Apple Watch alerted me.'” Dr. Nguyen, who also specializes in informatics, appreciates when patients bring in extensive data collected from their smartwatches, rings, and other wearable devices.

Another doctor has issued a serious warning for pregnant women who wear an Apple Watch.

Dr. Nguyen cautions that Apple Watch users should avoid self-diagnosing and interpreting health data unless they are medical professionals.

“Raw data does not constitute a diagnosis; it merely indicates symptoms,”

She explained. “You may have symptoms and concerns, and while you can search online or consult WebMD, the symptoms remain. Ultimately, you still require the human element, which ideally should come from your doctor, to determine what is actually happening.” In Dr. Manalo’s case, a C-section was necessary because her heart could no longer manage a vaginal delivery.

Her daughter, Samantha, was born weighing just five ounces. Dr. Manalo continues to take medication to manage her heart condition. If you know someone who is expecting a baby, consider gifting them a smartwatch or a ring capable of monitoring heart health. This gesture could potentially save the lives of both the pregnant mother and her baby.
