Google provides a variety of widgets on Android that offer instant updates on your home screen without the need to open individual apps. At the end of last year, there was excitement about a potential new sports widget, but it appears that it has been permanently abandoned as the code for it is no longer visible in the Google app.

Google may have discontinued its sports widget before you had the opportunity to test it.
The Google app offers a variety of widgets catering to different interests, from controlling smart homes to providing weather updates and enhanced search functions. Despite these diverse options, sports fans prefer using dedicated score tracker apps to keep up with games they can’t watch live.
Last year, the news of a new Google widget specifically for tracking sports scores generated excitement among sports enthusiasts. Although Google has not officially acknowledged the widget’s existence, app researcher Assemble Debug has found that the code has been removed from a recent version of the app, suggesting that Google may have discontinued it.
It is not uncommon for tech companies like Google to discontinue features, tools, apps, or services during or after the development or testing phase.
A feature that is tested may not resonate with users due to reasons such as unclear usability, lack of solving a critical issue, or the availability of better alternatives within Google’s existing products. Additionally, changes in product priorities can result in a new feature being discontinued before user testing commences.
Nevertheless, even though Google is known for putting ideas on hold, numerous hardware and software inventions are constantly being developed and improved as companies prioritize more important features for their products. Therefore, we may hear about Google’s sports tracking widget again in the future.
