Google unveils Pixel 9 line, aims to attract impatient buyers

Later today, Google will be hosting its “Made by Google” event where they will unveil the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Surprisingly, this event is taking place in August, with former Motorola president Ric Osterloh playing a key role.

Osterloh, who joined Google in 2016, now leads the hardware and Android software teams to bring innovation to the market. It is speculated that Google may have lost potential customers to Apple in the past by delaying the release of the Pixel until after the latest iPhone models.

However, with the upcoming event showcasing new AI features, consumers may be swayed to choose a Pixel 9 model over waiting for the iPhone 16 series.

Analysts suggest that Google’s decision to hold the event in August, rather than October, indicates a shift towards a more serious approach to hardware and smartphones. Mandeep Singh, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, attributes this change to Osterloh’s leadership.

According to Bloomberg, Osterloh’s reputation has grown at Google despite Apple and Samsung continuing to dominate the U.S. smartphone market.

In recent years, the Pixel has evolved from an Android proof-of-concept to a formidable competitor against Apple and Samsung. Despite a challenging year following the release of the Pixel 6 series, sales have been steadily increasing.

Issues with a subpar modem, slow processor, and malfunctioning under-display fingerprint scanner hindered Google after the launch of the Pixel 6 lineup. However, Google has been working diligently to enhance the series each year.

The upcoming release of the Pixel 10, featuring a Tensor G5 chip developed by Google and manufactured by TSMC using its 3nm process node, could mark a fresh start for the series.

LG seeks compensation for canceled Apple Watch microLED order

Regarding this year, Google’s decision to surpass Apple on the calendar could indicate its confidence in the superiority of its AI features over Apple Intelligence.

Bloomberg Intelligence’s Singh suggests that Google is ahead of Apple and is likely to outperform them with the iPhone 16. This could result in consumers giving Google the response it desires, leading to a strong pre-order period for the Pixel 9 line. The “Made by Google” event is scheduled for 10 am PDT/1 pm EDT.
