After numerous reports and leaks, Meta has finally confirmed that the Quest 3S is indeed real. Support documentation for the Meta Quest 3 referenced the long-anticipated Quest 3S, which is expected to be a budget-friendly version of the Quest 3. Additionally, Meta revealed details about the new action button on the upcoming headset.

As a longstanding advocate for XR (Extended Reality), Meta has consistently produced excellent and affordable VR hardware over the years. The Quest 3S, previously rumored to be called the Quest 3 Lite, aims to make VR more accessible.

VR enthusiast Lunayian, known for her ability to uncover early information, was the first to spot the mentions of the Quest 3S. After she brought it to light, those mentions began to vanish, but it was already too late.

According to the support documentation, the Quest 3S will be compatible with Quest 3 controllers and accessories, such as the elite strap with a battery. The new headset will also feature the same status display lights as the Quest 3.

We have heard rumors and seen renders of a new action button for the Meta Quest 3S, which the support documentation also mentioned. This button is reportedly designed to allow users to quickly switch between passthrough mode and fully immersive VR. In my opinion, this is very convenient and further demonstrates Meta’s strong desire to make Mixed Reality more accessible to the average consumer.

From prior leaks, we can reasonably conclude that the Quest 3S will be just as powerful as the Quest 3.

A leak regarding the Quest 3S’s specifications from Luna indicated that the new headset will utilize the same chipset as its more expensive counterpart. This theory gains additional support from the fact that the Quest 3S name once appeared and then vanished from the Horizon Store, alongside support for Quest 3 games. Instead of downgrading resolution, the Quest 3S will likely feature cheaper lenses and other compromises to help reduce the price.

Other reports suggest that the Quest 3S will be priced at around $300. If it is indeed set to be announced this year, we can expect to see it at this month’s Meta Connect. With Quest 3 performance available at a lower price point, I anticipate that the Quest 3S will quickly become one of the top VR headsets on the market.
