HMD Fusion: New Modular Smartphone Coming to the US
Project Fusion was first introduced earlier this year at MWC (Mobile World Congress), but HMD provided limited information about this new technological initiative.
The project was hinted at again in April, yet HMD remained tight-lipped about its specifics. Fast forward a few months, and the Finnish company has finally revealed what it previously referred to as Project Fusion.
Launched today at IFA 2024, the HMD Fusion represents the company’s vision for a modular smartphone. According to HMD, the Fusion is the ultimate customizable smartphone. With a range of interchangeable accessories set to be released later this year, users can tailor the HMD Fusion to match their personal style or functional needs.
The best part is that the HMD Fusion is priced at just £200 / €250. While it will initially be available for purchase in Europe, HMD plans to introduce it to the US market as well, where it will retail for $300.
The base model features fairly modest specifications, leading me to wonder about the pricing of these “interchangeable outfits.” Nevertheless, those who opt for the €250 / $300 base model will receive an entry-level smartphone equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, along with options for 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.
The device boasts a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. On the rear, it features a 108-megapixel main camera accompanied by a 2-megapixel depth sensor, while a 50-megapixel front camera is available for selfies.
The HMD Fusion is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 33W wired charging and runs on Android 14 right out of the box. In addition to launching this customizable smartphone, HMD announced plans to release a software and hardware developer kit that will enable users to personalize their own phones and create new use cases.
