During Meta Connect this week, the company announced a VR port of Triangle Strategy for its Quest headsets. Developed by Square Enix, Triangle Strategy offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic Game Boy turn-based JRPGs that many grew up playing.
The VR port, specifically in Mixed Reality, aims to revive the nostalgia of your childhood.
Originally released to overwhelmingly positive reviews in 2022, Triangle Strategy draws inspiration from classics like the Final Fantasy Tactics series, delivering clever combat along with a rich narrative.
This game is not for those who prefer to rush through battles; expect plenty of dialogue.
However, if you enjoy that aspect—like I do—this Mixed Reality version appears to be absolutely stunning.
It’s an unexpected yet perfect application of Mixed Reality, in my view.
You can project levels and arenas onto real surfaces in your home and watch the characters engage in combat. Furthermore, these levels can be viewed from any angle, giving the impression that you’ve stepped into your old Game Boy Advance.
The 2D animations and vibrant sprites reminiscent of a past era are sure to delight any seasoned gamer. Additionally, the gameplay is engaging and avoids dragging or introducing unnecessary mechanics; everything serves a purpose, and each character is distinct.
Triangle Strategy is not the only game announced at Meta Connect.
The Quest-exclusive Batman: Arkham Shadow is included with Quest 3 and 3S purchases until April 30, 2025.
There’s also Just Dance VR for those moments when simply listening to music isn’t enough.

After witnessing how Triangle Strategy will look in Mixed Reality, I’m hoping for a similar port of an old Pokémon game.
Pokémon Ruby was a significant part of my childhood, and experiencing it in Mixed Reality would likely bring me to tears.
