Nokia, or more accurately HMD, has not performed particularly well in updating its phones to Android 14, especially when compared to many other smartphone manufacturers over the past several months.

In addition to providing less than three years of Android OS updates for certain devices (my sympathies to Nokia X10 users), HMD appears to have overlooked some of the commitments it made regarding older models like the Nokia X20 and Nokia XR20.

Launched just a few months apart three years ago, both the Nokia X20 and XR20 were expected to receive three years of Android OS updates, meaning Android 14 would be their final major software upgrade.

With the release of Android 15 just weeks away, only one of these devices has received the update so far. According to NokiaMob, HMD has begun to roll out the long-awaited Android 14 update to the Nokia XR20.

However, this appears to be an incremental rollout, so not everyone will receive it immediately.

To make matters worse, the update only includes the August 2024 security patch, meaning it is not even the latest version released by Google.

If you are among the fortunate Nokia XR20 owners who have received the update, you can look forward to a more refined user interface, enhanced overall performance with quicker app launches and improved multitasking capabilities, along with advanced privacy settings that give users greater control over their data and app permissions.

Nokia XR20 users who have not yet been notified about the update should navigate to Settings > System > System Update > Check for updates and press the Download and Install button if the update appears. Be patient if the update isn’t available right away, as these rollouts can take time to reach all users.

As previously mentioned, this is the final major Android OS update that HMD has committed to delivering to Nokia XR20 users, so if you are interested in Android 15, you will need to upgrade to a newer device.
