The 2023 Motorola Razr clamshell, the most affordable foldable phone in the US, has begun receiving the latest Android 14 version update.
Motorola doesn’t boast about continuous Android software updates like Samsung or Google. Instead, they categorize their phones into flagships, midrangers, and budget devices, which only receive 2 years of Android version and security updates.
Motorola was able to capture LG’s market share in the US by offering affordable handsets that provide great value, including their flagship and foldable phone models. Their devices have features such as larger screens on their Razr clamshell phones with foldable displays and higher refresh rates compared to competitors like Samsung. However, where Motorola falls short is in their Android software and security updates, which are not as frequent as other brands like Samsung and Apple. While their budget phones receive security patches for 2 years and midrange and flagship models are updated for 3-4 years, new Android versions may take longer to be released.
The 4 years of security updates apply to specific models in the foldable Razr line, which directly competes with Samsung’s Z Flip line. This appears to be a strategic move for balancing resources and aligns with the practices of other brands in the same category. Motorola is currently rolling out the Android 14 update for its Razr 2023 and Razr+ 2023 clamshell foldable handsets, ensuring owners receive the benefits of the latest Android software.
